High level overview of the features of our new EarthScout SOIL CUB 5-in-1 Soil Moisture Meter. Features include instant soil moisture, soil temperature, soil electroconductivity, air temperature, and humidity, all in an affordable, portable device.
EarthScout TDR Sensors – The Gold Standard: EarthScout Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) sensors are considered the gold standard in precision sensors, and used in government & university research due to its accuracy and reliability. Measures soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil electroconductivity. Installs into undisturbed soil and no calibration is needed. Use in natural soil, Rock Wool, Coco Coir, Perlite, Peat, Sand, Clay, and more. Cal also be used in high organic matter, high salt, and soil-less root zone mixes. Easy to install and uninstall.
Get Quick Shallow Soil Moisture Readings: Find an area of soil that is free of large rocks or debris. Use one or two hands to press the sensor vertically, diagonally or horizontally into the soil until the black (nubs) are completely covered and the head of the sensor is flush with the soil. TDR Soil moisture sensors require the tines to be inserted completely for accurate readings.
The soil temperature reading is taken from the black sensor head, therefore requires full contact with the soil. For deeper soil temperature readings, be sure the black sensor head is in contact with the soil at the depth you desire.
Dig A Hole for Deep Readings: For deeper readings, use a shovel or soil auger to dig a hole. Then, insert the TDR sensor either vertically through the bottom of the hole, or horizontally into the side wall of the hole. When placing the 5.5″ long sensor tines vertically, you receive the average soil readings across the 5.5″ tines. When you place the sensor tines horizontally, you will receive the exact reading at the depth the sensor is placed.
Insert Sensor In Potted & Bagged Plants: Great for nurseries. Place the TDR soil sensor vertically or at an angle in the top of a pot or bag. Or, use a utility knife to cut a slot in your plastic pot or bag and insert the TDR sensor into the side for a fast reading.
How To Use Soil Cub Data Readings: Soil Cub 5-in-1 Soil Moisture Meter measurements are highly accurate numerical values you can use to monitor conditions and make decisions anywhere/anytime. 1. Soil Moisture: The Volumetric Water Content (VWC) of your soil as a percent of moisture. Reference it to know when to water. 2. Soil Temperature: The temperature of your soil in degrees Fahrenheit. Reference it to know when to plant, fertilize, and more. 3. Soil Electroconductivity (EC): EC (salinity/soil salt content) readings in Microsiemens (μS). Reference it to manage plant health. 4. Air Temperature & Humidity: Added environmental data to enhance your experience. Know weather conditions that may impact your soil.
Quick Soil Texture Guide: Reference this chart on the front of the Soil Cub Meter case to estimate your Field Capacity (FC) and Permanent Wilting Point (PWP) based on your soil texture.
Use It Everywhere You Grow: Soil Cub 5-in-1 Soil Moisture Meter is the perfect tool for on-demand soil moisture monitoring. It’s great for use on a farm, vineyard, garden, greenhouse, turf, nursery, orchard, landscape, forestry, research, and education.

The EarthScout TDR (SDI-12) Soil Moisture Sensor is a precision Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) that provides highly accurate volumetric water content (VWC) measurements in soils and other porous media. Trusted by leading researchers, it offers the same TDR technology found in high-end instruments that cost thousands of dollars more. Compact yet powerful, it integrates precision TDR components and a 15 cm waveguide within a small enclosure.
Key Advantages:
- High-Resolution TDR Technology: Delivers 5ps resolution for precise water content measurements (up to 1.00 m³/m³), using advanced waveform digitizing and analyzing firmware for precise time-domain analysis.
- Improved Sensitivity: Direct coupling of the TDR function to the waveguide eliminates coax cables, enhancing bandwidth, resolution, and measurement sensitivity.
- Fast Performance: Ultra-fast rise time (150ps), rapid response (<0.25 sec), and low power consumption (0.09 J per reading) make it ideal for both field and laboratory use.
- Robust and Reliable: VWC readings are unaffected by bulk electrical conductivity (under 1.8 dS/m) and soil compaction, eliminating the need for soil-specific calibration.
- Durable and Energy-Efficient: Low sleep current (<10 µA) supports long battery life.
